Should you need reminding of the mind-blowing beauty of flowers then I urge you to make your way to Baltic, sit in the darkened room and watch this. Artist, Salla Tykkä, has made a ten minute time lapse film of a water lily opening over two nights - it does this once a year. The two other films are beautiful too but for a florist, this was the one to mention. The waterlily changes colour before your eyes from white to deep pink.
I’m almost always in awe of flowers but from time to time I find myself numb to them as I sling stems into the compost bag, wash buckets and type invoices. It is a job after all. And I can be ruthless, it all comes down to space. I can’t keep everything forever. My mother sometimes gasps as I snap stems that still have a little life in them and crush them into the bin with my foot. So today, some of the flowers returning after a week in offices, were given a stay of execution.
